Hyundai and Kia Patent a Removable Roof Concept for a Future Pickup

Newly published patent filings in the U.S. and Germany reveal Hyundai Motor Group is exploring an unusual removable-roof design for a pickup truck.

Hyundai and Kia Patent a Removable Roof Concept for a Future Pickup

Fresh patent documents from the U.S. and German intellectual property offices show that Hyundai Motor Group is working on a pickup truck featuring a removable roof. The filings were submitted jointly by Hyundai and Kia, and the concept looks unconventional even by pickup-segment standards.

The patents focus on the mounting and sealing system for a large removable roof panel. Rather than emphasizing the transformation itself, the engineers concentrate on durability and weather protection. The design relies on multiple layers of sealing intended to maintain water tightness even after repeated removal and reinstallation of the roof. The documentation also mentions the option of removable doors, reinforcing the idea of a more open, airy cabin layout.

From an engineering standpoint, the idea isn’t groundbreaking, but it does raise questions about practicality. Solutions like this are more commonly associated with niche off-road vehicles than with mainstream pickups. Notably, the patent isn’t tied to any specific model or existing platform, suggesting this is still an early-stage concept rather than a production-ready vehicle.

Hyundai has previously made it clear that it wants to expand its presence in the pickup market and challenge established players. A recent patent covering a transformable rear cab wall, combined with this removable-roof concept, points to a broader search for unconventional ideas. Even if this particular pickup never reaches showrooms, the direction is clear: Hyundai Motor Group is testing the limits of the traditional pickup formula in an effort to stand out in a highly competitive segment.
