Jeep Safety Concern Forces Stellantis to Roll Out Urgent Software Update

Stellantis is recalling over 419,000 Jeep SUVs in the U.S. after discovering a software issue affecting side airbag deployment timing.

Jeep Safety Concern Forces Stellantis to Roll Out Urgent Software Update

Stellantis has announced a major safety recall in the United States involving 419,035 Jeep vehicles. The problem stems from a software defect that could delay side airbag deployment during a crash.

The recall affects 2022–2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee models and 2023–2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue means the vehicles may not fully comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

While the problem sounds technical, the potential consequences are serious. In a side-impact collision, even a slight delay in airbag deployment could reduce passenger protection.

The fix itself is relatively straightforward. Dealers will update the software in the occupant restraint control module free of charge. Stellantis says the airbags themselves do not need replacement because the issue is tied to the system’s programming rather than any mechanical defect.

For Stellantis, the recall is significant because it involves one of Jeep’s core SUV lines and affects hundreds of thousands of vehicles across multiple model years.

Owners are advised to check their VIN numbers, wait for official recall notifications, and schedule service as soon as possible. When it comes to airbag systems, experts say it’s not something drivers should put off until a real-world accident exposes the problem.
