2028 Ford Fiesta EV Targets 250 Miles of Range With Battery Pack Up to 54 kWh

Ford's future electric Fiesta could offer competitive range while retaining the brand's signature driving character.

2028 Ford Fiesta EV Targets 250 Miles of Range With Battery Pack Up to 54 kWh

Even if the next-generation Ford Fiesta doesn't arrive until 2028, early projections suggest it could remain highly competitive in the growing electric hatchback segment. A driving range of around 250 miles would still be a respectable figure, especially in Europe, where compact EVs continue to dominate the market.

While Ford has yet to reveal official specifications, the company appears to be preparing a significant upgrade to the Fiesta's electric hardware. The biggest change is expected to come from the battery pack, helping the model stay relevant against a wave of new rivals scheduled to arrive around the same time.

For now, the closest benchmark is the current Renault 5 EV, which is sold in Europe with two battery options: a 40-kWh pack and a larger 54-kWh unit. Those versions produce 119 horsepower and 148 horsepower, respectively.

If Ford adopts a similar approach, the larger battery could allow the Fiesta EV to deliver a driving range close to 250 miles on a full charge. Final numbers, of course, will depend on the vehicle's weight, aerodynamics, and overall efficiency.

Even with a launch potentially two years away, a 250-mile range would compare well with several upcoming competitors. Early reports suggest vehicles such as the Volkswagen ID. Polo, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq may offer maximum ranges of roughly 280 miles, placing the Fiesta firmly within the same competitive window.

Ford also insists that electrification won't come at the expense of the brand's identity. Executives have emphasized that the company's motorsports heritage will continue influencing future products, ensuring the new Fiesta still feels unmistakably like a Ford.

Preview images hint at several sporty design elements inspired by the classic Fiesta XR2i. Visible details include a more aggressive stance, split headlight design, and black wheel-arch cladding that gives the compact hatchback a more athletic appearance.

Details about the interior remain scarce. Ford has not yet confirmed which infotainment platform will power the vehicle, although company representatives have indicated a desire to streamline software systems across future models. The goal is to make updates faster and create a more distinct user experence compared with alliance partners.

That strategy has fueled speculation that the Fiesta EV could utilize Renault-derived underpinnings while featuring Ford-developed software and tuning. Whether that scenario ultimately materializes remains to be seen.

For now, one thing is clear: Ford appears determined to bring back the Fiesta name with enough range, technology, and driving appeal to compete in a crowded EV marketplace. If the projected 250-mile figure becomes reality, the small hatchback should have little trouble remaining relevent when it arrives later this decade.

And for longtime Fiesta fans, that's probably the most importnt news of all.
