Toyota is Preparing an Electric SUV That May Shock the U.S. Market

The U.S. market may soon see an all-new electric vehicle: a fully electric Toyota Land Cruiser SUV. Speculation ramped up after Toyota unveiled the Land Cruiser Se Concept at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023—without promising a production version. Now, insiders suggest the concept was more than just a design exercise.

According to Reuters, citing its own sources, Toyota plans to build two three-row electric SUVs at its Kentucky plant. One will be based on the legendary Land Cruiser, while the other will expand the RAV4 lineup with a three-row option. Toyota itself has confirmed plans for two three-row EVs but hasn’t disclosed their names.

As part of a broader production shift, Toyota will move Lexus ES sedan production back to Japan from Kentucky. Meanwhile, its Indiana facility will ramp up production of the Grand Highlander to meet growing demand. These moves are part of what Toyota calls a “strategic transition” aimed at boosting manufacturing efficiency. By mid-2027, the company plans to launch seven new electric models in the U.S.

If the reports prove accurate, Toyota isn’t just electrifying one of its most iconic nameplates—it’s doubling down on America’s SUV craze. A fully electric Land Cruiser could become a major contender in the premium EV market.
