Toyota Recalls More Than 16,000 RAV4 and Highlander Crossovers Over “Black Screen” Multimedia Issue

A new recall campaign is being prepared in the Chinese market involving two Toyota manufacturing operations. The plan has been submitted to the State Administration for Market Regulation under China’s current rules for recalling defective vehicles. The recall covers vehicles produced at two facilities: FAW Toyota Motor (Chengdu) Co., Ltd. and GAC Toyota Motor Co., Ltd.

The first phase of the recall affects RAV4 crossovers. Under recall number S2026M0013V, vehicles produced between December 5, 2025, and January 13, 2026, will be recalled starting January 23, 2026. A total of 10,922 vehicles are included.

The second batch is listed separately under recall number S2026M0014V. This campaign covers Highlander crossovers built between December 11, 2025, and January 12, 2026. The number of affected vehicles is smaller, totaling 5,056 units.

Both recalls are due to the same issue. Because of incorrect software settings controlling the multimedia display, the screen may turn black when the vehicle is started and fail to recover. As a result, the driver may lose access to heating and windshield defogging functions. In rare cases, this could reduce visibility and pose a safety risk.

The fix is standard: manufacturers will update the multimedia system software free of charge to eliminate the problem. Owners will be notified by registered mail. In addition, they can contact FAW Toyota or GAC Toyota customer service centers or check recall information on the official product recall website maintained by the regulatory authority.
