Volkswagen Will Build Two Completely Different Tiguans

German trade union IG Metall has officially confirmed rumors that first surfaced about two years ago: Volkswagen will replace the ID.4 with the ID.Tiguan. The rebranding will take place as part of a planned refresh of the first crossover. At the same time, Volkswagen will continue producing the gasoline-powered Tiguan. The company previously made a similar decision with the Polo and T-Cross, despite the debuts of the electric ID.Polo and ID.Cross.

The ID.Tiguan looks different not only from the gasoline-powered Tiguan but also from the ID.4. The new model follows the styling of the aforementioned ID.Cross. The ID.Tiguan features slim headlights, with an illuminated VW badge likely positioned between them. The smooth front bumper incorporates narrow, vertically oriented fog lights and a three-section air intake.

The new ID.Tiguan’s interior will also follow the styling of the ID.Cross. That means the larger crossover will feature plenty of physical controls in addition to a large touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. Drivers have frequently criticized the ID.4 because most of its systems are adjusted through touch-sensitive controls.

The German automaker has not yet revealed details about the vehicle’s technical specifications. Like the ID.4, the new ID.Tiguan will likely debut with versions featuring either one or two electric motors. Volkswagen will most likely add a larger battery, which could bring the German model’s range close to 435 miles.
