Stellantis Is Testing Cars That Might Be Smarter Than Some Drivers

Stellantis is showcasing prototype vehicles equipped with lidars, radars, and V2X connectivity as part of its next-generation autonomous-driving development.

The company presented its latest self-driving technologies at the Hi-Drive event in Brussels. The Hi-Drive project focuses on advancing transportation automation in complex, real-world traffic conditions. Stellantis brought two experimental vehicles to the demonstration: the electric Peugeot e-2008 and the Maserati Levante.

The Peugeot e-2008 features eight lidars, nine cameras, four radars, and V2X communication. This sensor suite provides full 360-degree data collection and allows engineers to test automated functions in dense urban traffic. The Maserati Levante highlights capabilities such as high-precision mapping, road-sign recognition, and real-time alerts.

Stellantis is also testing 5G and short-range communication technologies that enable vehicles to exchange data with one another and with surrounding infrastructure. The company already offers Level 2+ driver-assistance systems and is developing Level 4 autonomous vehicles for robotaxi services in partnership with NVIDIA, Uber, Foxconn, and Pony.ai.
