Ford Gives the Ford Explorer More Power — But There’s a Catch for Towing

New factory-backed tuning package boosts the Explorer’s twin-turbo V6 by an additional 45 horsepower.

Ford Gives the Ford Explorer More Power — But There’s a Catch for Towing

Ford Performance Parts has introduced a new calibration package for the 2025 Ford Explorer. The upgrade is available exclusively for models equipped with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, including the Explorer ST, Platinum, and King Ranch trims. Versions powered by the 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder are not compatible with the kit.

In factory form, the V6 engine produces 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. After installing the new calibration, output climbs to 445 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 515 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. Ford also says drivers can expect sharper throttle response and revised transmission tuning for quicker shifts.

There is one important requirement, however: the upgraded performance figures are only achievable when using premium-grade gasoline.

The package, identified by part number M-9603-EX30A, includes a ProCal4 device. The calibration becomes permanently linked to the vehicle’s VIN after installation, meaning it cannot later be transferred to another Ford Explorer, even if it uses the same engine.

The upgrade also comes with a few compromises. Ford does not recommend towing with vehicles equipped with this calibration package. In addition, the modified SUV no longer meets California emissions regulations after installation.

If the package is installed by an authorized Ford dealer or an ASE-certified technician, it is backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty. The calibration kit is priced at $850.
