This 30-Foot Airstream Was Rebuilt Into an Off-Grid Luxury Home Designed for Full-Time Living
A meticulously restored 2002 Airstream has been transformed into a self-sufficient home on wheels.
Classic Airstream trailers are famous for their polished aluminum bodies and timeless styling, but they’re also known for something equally impressive: longevity. With proper maintenance, these iconic RVs can stay on the road for decades. Eventually, though, aging interiors and outdated systems need attention—and that’s where custom builders like Wolf Dog Buses come in.

Based in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, Wolf Dog Buses specializes in creating off-grid, four-season tiny homes from buses, vans, and other vehicles. Led by founder Brianna Sellick, the company recently completed one of its most ambitious projects yet—a complete makeover of a 2002 Airstream designed for year-round living.

Built for a client planning to live in it full-time, the 30-foot trailer underwent a comprehensive restoration. The team stripped the Airstream down to its shell before rebuilding it with modern amenities, upgraded systems, and premium materials. Completed in 2025, the project even included replacing the roof and installing a robust off-grid electrical setup.

Although the trailer retains its signature aluminum exterior, several practical upgrades have been added. Reinforced telescoping steps, a full-length awning, a bike rack mounted on the tongue, and an outdoor shower improve usability, while a three-inch suspension lift provides additional ground clearance.

Unlike many RVs intended primarily for fair-weather camping, this Airstream was engineered for true four-season use. Spray-foam insulation, heated floors, air conditioning, and a substantial solar power system allow it to remain comfortable during both sweltering summers and freezing winters.

Inside, the owners requested a mid-century modern aesthetic paired with the comforts of a contemporary home. Wolf Dog Buses answered with warm earth tones, camel-colored leather, and natural hardwood finishes, creating a space that feels upscale without sacrificing practicality.

The interior is divided into two main areas. Up front is an open-concept living and kitchen space, while the rear section houses a private bathroom and bedroom.

The lounge area serves multiple purposes, functioning as a living room, dining area, and workspace. A reclining sofa with storage compartments on both sides provides a comfortable place to relax. Matching cabinets nearby add extra storage and feature pull-out tables that can be used for dining or remote work. One cabinet also conceals the Rixen heating system.

Among the most eye-catching details are handcrafted live-edge maple burl countertops, which bring a touch of rustic character to the interior. One countertop extends into a cozy dining nook with seating for two.

The galley kitchen is surprisingly spacious and feels more residential than RV-like. One side includes generous counter space, a full-size refrigerator, and a six-bottle wine cooler. Thoughtful touches include a built-in knife block, a walnut shelf for herbs equipped with a timed grow light, and a custom copper backsplash.

A raised cabinet nearby hides a flat-screen TV that rises at the push of a button, along with additional storage compartments.

Across the aisle, the second half of the kitchen offers extensive cabinetry, toe-kick drawers, and custom shelving. Cooking duties are handled by a two-burner induction cooktop and a microwave-convection oven. A large copper sink complements the backsplash and adds a distinctive industrial flair.

Convenience features include a slide-out walnut cutting board and a full-height pull-out pantry. The upper section of the pantry follows the Airstream’s curved ceiling, making use of space that would otherwise go unused.

One of the biggest design challenges involved creating separation between the front living area and the rear bedroom while maintaining flexibility. Wolf Dog Buses solved the problem with walnut doors featuring frosted plexiglass panels and magnetic latches. Depending on their position, the doors can create varying levels of privacy—or transform the center section into a remarkably spacious bathroom.

The bathroom itself includes a large 40-by-35-inch shower, a roomy vanity with abundant storage, and a handcrafted ceramic vessel sink. There’s even a heated shelf designed for drying towels and clothing.

At the rear of the trailer sits a bedroom inspired by luxury yacht cabins. Padded leather wall panels accented with walnut trim create an elegant atmosphere, while soft fabrics and warm tones make the space feel inviting. The room includes a comfortable bed, bedside storage, a mirror, and a shelf above the headboard for personal items and décor.
Practicality remained a priority throughout the build. In addition to air conditioning and a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe, the trailer features a dedicated electrical cabinet housing three EG4 batteries and other key components. Beneath its luxury finishes, this restored Airstream is designed to be a fully self-sufficient home capable of supporting life off the grid year-round.
