Volvo XC60 Surpasses Iconic Volvo 240 in Sales
The Volvo XC60 has become the best-selling car in the history of the Swedish brand.
The midsize crossover Volvo XC60 has officially surpassed sales of the legendary Volvo 240, which held the title of the brand's most popular car for over 30 years. Now the XC60 stands in first place on the Swedish manufacturer's bestseller list.
The model premiered in 2008 at the Geneva Motor Show, and over two generations, its global sales have reached 2.7 million units. In comparison, the Volvo 240 sold around 2.5 million units during its production period.

The first XC60 was produced at Volvo's Belgian plant in Ghent and was based on the 2006 concept. Interestingly, the Volvo P3 platform, on which the SUV is built, was also partially used in the second-generation Land Rover Freelander. This is because both brands were part of Ford Motor Company at that time.

Interestingly, one of Volvo XC60's marketing successes is considered to be its \"starring role\" in the film "Twilight." More precisely, this model became the car of the main character in the adaptation, played by Robert Pattinson. The SUV appeared in the second and third films of the saga, and marketers subsequently launched a successful advertising campaign targeting younger audiences. This boosted sales in Europe, and especially in the North American market.
Initially, the XC60 was equipped with a 3.0 T6 inline "six" with turbocharging, delivering 285 hp, paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Later, production expanded to China, significantly strengthening the model's position in the Asian market.
The current generation XC60 introduces plug-in hybrid powertrains to a wider audience and became the best-selling plug-in hybrid in Europe last year.
In 2026, the crossover received a minor facelift. Changes include a new grille with an inclined profile and polished trim, as well as a redesigned front bumper with improved aerodynamics.

The interior now features an updated Google Automotive multimedia system, which debuted on the XC90 and EX90 flagships. It is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon Cockpit platform. The central screen is increased to 11.2 inches, and wireless charging and cup holders have been made more convenient.

Under the hood is a hybrid powertrain: a 2.0-liter turbo engine and an electric motor on the rear axle. The system's combined power is 462 hp, and an 8-speed automatic handles power delivery. The energy is stored in an 18.8 kWh battery.
