Lotus Builds Its First-Ever Plug-In Hybrid After 77 Years, Promising a Market Shake-Up

Lotus Technology has officially signaled a major shift in strategy: for the first time in its 77-year history, the brand is introducing a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). The model made its public debut on December 5, 2025, after being listed in the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) catalog of new vehicles.

For a company that has recently been closely associated with fully electric cars and advanced digital platforms, the move marks a notable expansion of its lineup and an effort to appeal to buyers who still want electric driving with the reassurance of a gasoline backup.

The launch in China is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026. A separate technology-focused presentation is planned for January, where Lotus is expected to reveal more details about the powertrain. After the initial rollout in China, the company intends to introduce the model to international markets.

Lotus says the decision to add a PHEV fits squarely within its broader electrification roadmap and is designed to help the brand compete in a wider range of vehicle segments.
