Stellantis Ditches the Circle for a Square: Radical Steering Wheel Now Being Tested on Real Cars

Peugeot has begun real-world testing of its Hypersquare steering wheel, an unconventional square-shaped design that the brand intends to bring into production.

A prototype fitted with the unusual steering wheel is already undergoing testing based on the electric Peugeot E-2008 crossover.

The system is being developed in combination with steer-by-wire technology, meaning there is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels.

The square steering wheel was first unveiled in 2023 on the Inception concept car. Peugeot has now moved from concept to practical evaluation and has even allowed journalists behind the wheel of the prototype. The Hypersquare features four large cutouts, with the upper sections used to house controls and provide thumb rests. According to early impressions, the grip feels more natural than expected.

The steer-by-wire system continuously varies the steering ratio depending on vehicle speed. At low speeds, the ratio is roughly 5:1, resulting in extremely quick responses. German automotive journalists noted that the steering can feel twitchy during parking maneuvers, but becomes more stable and predictable at higher speeds. For the next-generation Peugeot 208, multiple steering modes are planned, including a softer setting for everyday driving and a sportier option.

To preserve road feel, the system also delivers tactile feedback through controlled vibrations. Peugeot expects this technology to reach production vehicles starting with the 2026 model year.
