Volkswagen Prepares the Hybrid Tiguan L ePRO on a New PHEV Platform: Spotted in Spy Photos

A new set of spy photos of the 2027 Volkswagen Tiguan L ePRO test vehicle has surfaced, giving an early look at Volkswagen’s upcoming plug-in hybrid crossover. According to sources, the official release of these materials is expected around June, when the Passat ePRO is also likely to make an appearance. The crossover is reportedly being developed on SAIC Volkswagen’s next-generation PHEV platform, with mild updates to the exterior design.

Judging by the camouflage, most of the changes are concentrated at the front and rear. Up front, the Tiguan L ePRO is expected to feature a closed-off grille, with small ventilation openings retained along the upper section. The lower bumper has also been reworked, with a new shape and revised air inlets at the corners. The rear appears largely unchanged in the spy shots, suggesting only subtle design tweaks. One important detail is already clearly visible, though: a charging port located on the left rear fender.

No major overhaul is expected inside the cabin. According to reports, the interior will closely mirror that of the gasoline-powered Tiguan L. Under the skin, however, the Tiguan L ePRO is expected to be closely related to the Passat ePRO.

As a reference point, sources cite a plug-in hybrid system based on a 1.5-liter EA211 EVO II engine, with peak output reaching about 194 horsepower (145 kW), paired with a 22-kWh battery pack. Electric-only driving range under the CLTC cycle is expected to exceed 93 miles, while total driving range could reach up to roughly 800 miles. More technical details are expected to be revealed at a later date.
