Airbag Risk Prompts Recall: Mercedes-Benz Calls Back 52,000 Metris Vans
Mercedes is recalling tens of thousands of vans over a potential issue with the SRS airbag control unit.
Daimler Vans USA has announced a major recall involving 2020 and 2022–2023 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans. A total of 52,356 vehicles built between October 2019 and December 2023 are affected.
The recall stems from the potential for condensation to reach the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit. Under certain operating conditions, excess moisture can form on the housing of the HVAC air distribution unit and drip onto the airbag control module located beneath it.
Over time, this may lead to corrosion of the module’s electrical connector. Compromised conductivity could interfere with proper deployment of the restraint system in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

During its investigation, Mercedes-Benz identified approximately 50 reports involving illuminated airbag warning lights. Engineering tests determined that significant condensation buildup is only possible under very specific operating conditions. However, on January 30, 2026, the automaker concluded that the potential risk could not be fully ruled out and initiated a recall.
As part of the remedy, dealers will install a protective cover over the airbag control unit to prevent moisture intrusion. Production of vehicles with the potential issue ended on December 7, 2023, meaning newly built models are not affected.
Dealer notifications are scheduled to begin in mid-February 2026, with owner notification letters expected to be mailed by April. Owners will be able to check their VIN through the NHTSA recall database.
