Volkswagen Introduces the Most Powerful Golf GTI in History
What makes this car unique and what occasion is it tied to the release of the original production model.
The German brand has presented a new, "special" Golf GTI hatchback — in honor of the 50th anniversary of the legendary model.
Named Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50, the car will officially become the most powerful GTI ever and the fastest VW on the Nürburgring, even surpassing the latest all-wheel-drive Golf R.
No specific technical information is yet disclosed, however, VW has confirmed the highest engine power for a production GTI in history.

This means that the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will be upgraded to a power exceeding the 296 hp of the existing GTI Clubsport, likely approaching closely to the 328 hp of the latest Golf R. No GTI has boasted such power since the 306-hp GTI Clubsport S in 2017 — the model on which VW based this new Edition 50.

But the additional engine power is not the only thing ensuring very fast time on the "great and terrible" Nürburgring, and it is expected that alongside the more powerful engine, the German manufacturer has also gone through a series of procedures involving chassis upgrade, differential settings adjustments, and equipping the "hatch" with new track-oriented tires. According to preliminary information, the Golf GTI Edition 50 will receive 19-inch wheels.
The new VW Golf Edition 50 will be publicly unveiled at this year's "24 Hours of Nürburgring" race next week.
