Toyota Prepares Electric Land Cruiser and RAV4, Plans U.S. Production

Toyota is reshuffling its U.S. manufacturing, ending Lexus ES production to make room for two new electric SUVs based on the RAV4 and Land Cruiser.

Toyota Prepares Electric Land Cruiser and RAV4, Plans U.S. Production

The Japanese automaker is moving production of the next-generation Lexus ES back to Japan, freeing up assembly line space at its Kentucky plant for two three-row electric SUVs. One is expected to carry the Land Cruiser name, while the other will draw inspiration from the RAV4.

Toyota has been hinting at an electric Land Cruiser for several years, as the popularity of crossovers and SUVs continues to grow. By focusing on building and selling SUVs in the U.S., the company can also avoid tariffs on some of its most popular models.

2025 Toyota Land Cruiser

According to Reuters, the upcoming EVs “will be based on the Land Cruiser and RAV4.” While that wording suggests they might directly evolve from those models, it’s also possible the names will be used for vehicles that are otherwise new designs.

The Land Cruiser SE concept, first shown in 2023, fits perfectly as an electrified version of Toyota’s iconic SUV. Another potential—though less likely—candidate for the Land Cruiser badge is the long-rumored compact FJ Cruiser revival, but its size doesn’t suit a three-row configuration.

Toyota Sport Crossover Concept

The second model, described as a three-row electric SUV inspired by the RAV4, could prove even more significant for Toyota’s strategy. The RAV4 is currently the third best-selling vehicle in the U.S. this year. A family-friendly electric model positioned closer to the familiar RAV4 brand could provide Toyota’s EV lineup with the momentum that the bZ4X hasn’t achieved. If an electric RAV4 can capture even a fraction of the gasoline model’s popularity, it would be a major win for the brand.

Time, as always, will tell.
