This Custom Mercedes Sprinter Camper Van Brings Apartment-Level Comfort to the Backcountry
2024 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 AWD transformed into a thoughtfully built, off-grid-ready camper van.
In today’s saturated camper van market, buyers can choose between mass-produced layouts designed for affordability or go the fully custom route, where every detail is tailor-made. Rocky Mountain Builds falls squarely into the latter category. The Utah-based shop is convinced that no two conversions should look the same, and each project is crafted one at a time to reflect the owner’s lifestyle and taste.
Their latest build—a 2024 Mercedes Sprinter 2500 AWD—shows exactly what that philosophy looks like in practice. The van has been reimagined as a compact, off-grid home that feels more like a boutique apartment than a typical adventure rig.

Rocky Mountain Builds has spent more than a decade outfitting vans for travelers of all kinds, from weekend explorers to full-time nomads. Over the years, the company has developed a reputation for delivering conversions that blend comfort, practicality, and a touch of luxury. This newest project underscores their commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.

Built on the short-wheelbase 144-inch Sprinter, the conversion demonstrates how much usability can be squeezed out of a relatively small footprint without sacrificing aesthetics or comfort. The van remains easy to drive day-to-day, yet offers the amenities needed for extended trips. Power comes from a high-output 4-cylinder diesel engine paired with an automatic transmission, while the AWD system provides confidence when venturing off the pavement.

The exterior, finished in Blue Gray, features several add-ons typical for long-term travel. A White Top Adventures roof rack supports a solar array and provides room for extra cargo. Additional upgrades include a side ladder, a curved LED light bar, side steps for easier entry, and a Fiamma F45S awning for creating a shaded outdoor area.

Inside, the van has been fully hand-built using premium materials. Although the interior is compact, nothing essential has been left out. The space is designed to feel inviting and familiar, almost like a small home you can take anywhere.

The aesthetic follows a Japandi-inspired approach—clean lines, warm tones, and natural textures. Light Ultralite Ply walls, a slatted wood ceiling, and durable 2TEC2 flooring form the foundation. Book-matched walnut cabinetry, custom micro shaker doors, white solid-surface countertops, and a marble-tile backsplash elevate the look, giving the cabin a refined, modern feel.

Rocky Mountain Builds opted for an open layout with no divider between the front seats and living area, allowing natural light and sightlines to flow from end to end. The furniture is designed to be multifunctional, ensuring the limited space serves multiple purposes throughout the day.

The living area can host four to five people thanks to swivel cab seats, a rear couch-style bench, and a removable Lagun table. The bench doubles as a lounge spot and entertainment hub—there’s even a portable projector and screen stored in the cabinetry for impromptu movie nights. At bedtime, the bench extends into a roomy 75-by-50-inch sleeping space suitable for two adults.

Storage has also been carefully planned, with overhead cabinets running along both walls and additional space beneath the rear bench.
The kitchen setup features a hidden undermount sink with a collapsible faucet, a Bodega 12V fridge/freezer, and an Empava induction cooktop. Generous countertop space makes meal prep easy, while a solid walnut tambour compartment adds both utility and character.

To keep life comfortable off-grid, the van includes basic bathroom amenities such as a rear shower and a dedicated spot for a cassette toilet. Climate control is addressed through a Velit 2000R mini AC unit, a Maxxair Deluxe vent fan, and a VEVOR diesel heater. Lighting is fully dimmable and positioned to balance ambience with practicality.

A robust electrical setup supports true off-grid capability. The system centers around a 5 kWh EcoFlow lithium battery (roughly 400 Ah), powered by 400 watts of solar panels. Alternator and shore power charging options provide added flexibility, ensuring the van stays powered no matter where it’s parked.

Thoughtfully built and impressively equipped, this custom Sprinter conversion showcases Rocky Mountain Builds’ strengths: strong design, smart functionality, and a quietly luxurious atmosphere. For anyone considering making the road their home—even part-time—this van is currently listed for $157,000.
