Subaru Unveils the Uncharted, Its First Front-Wheel-Drive EV in Decades

Subaru has introduced the 2026 Uncharted, its first front-wheel-drive model in decades and currently the most affordable electric vehicle in the brand’s lineup. Pricing in the U.S. starts at $34,995, and for the first time since 1996, Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system is no longer standard—it's offered only on higher trims.

Built on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, the Uncharted shares much of its architecture with the Toyota C-HR+ and the bZ4X/Solterra EVs. The base front-wheel-drive configuration uses a single motor rated at 221 horsepower, while the Sport and GT trims upgrade to a dual-motor setup producing 338 horsepower.

Driving range varies by trim: the FWD version is estimated at about 298 miles, while the Sport is expected to reach around 280 miles, and the GT roughly 273 miles. All configurations use the same 74.7-kWh battery found in Subaru’s other EV offerings.

Size-wise, the Uncharted sits close to the popular Crosstrek, though it has slightly less ground clearance—8.3 inches—which is still sufficient for light off-roading. The model supports DC fast-charging up to 150 kW, enough to bring the battery from 10% to 80% in roughly 28 minutes.

Standard features include 18-inch wheels, a power liftgate, Eco and Snow drive modes, a 14-inch center display, dual-zone climate control, and Subaru’s full EyeSight safety suite. Higher trims add a surround-view camera, traffic-jam assist, lane-change assist, and upgraded cabin materials.

At the top of the range, the GT trim stands out with 20-inch wheels, a panoramic roof with a powered sunshade, ventilated seats, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a 20-inch central display. A two-tone exterior paint option is also available for an additional $970.

Despite its relatively low starting price, Subaru plans to produce the front-wheel-drive versions in limited quantities—likely encouraging buyers to consider more expensive trims. The Uncharted is already on sale and represents Subaru’s push to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing electric-vehicle market.
