300-Mile Range and All-Wheel Drive: America’s New Crossover Takes Aim at China

EV startup Rivian is preparing to expand into Europe with its new R2 crossover, a direct challenger to the Tesla Model Y. The 15.4-foot model was designed with exports in mind and will launch in the U.S. in the first half of 2026, starting at $45,000. A European rollout will follow, including right-hand-drive versions for the U.K.

The R2 will come standard with rear-wheel drive and a single motor, while an optional dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup will also be offered. Range is expected to exceed 300 miles, putting it in direct competition with top rivals in the segment. A smaller R3 hatchback and its sportier R3X variant are still without firm release dates.

Interestingly, the R2 is built on Rivian’s second-generation technology platform, which also underpins its partnership with Volkswagen. The nearly $6 billion joint venture will unify electronic systems, reduce production costs, and introduce new artificial intelligence features. The first VW models based on this architecture are due in 2026.

Rivian CEO Robert J. Scaringe emphasized that the brand will position the R2 as “affordable yet distinctive,” aiming to balance price with a premium feel. The company ultimately hopes to capture as much as 10% of the U.S. and European markets.
