Dodge Unveils Durango R/T 392: 475 HP and Starting Under $50K
The R/T 392 hits the sweet spot: three rows, 475 horsepower, and class-leading towing in an empty niche.
Dodge is expanding the Durango lineup, opening orders this March for the new R/T 392 — a version that sits between the standard V6/V8 trims and the extreme Durango SRT Hellcat. The headline upgrade is the engine: a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 producing 475 horsepower, replacing the outgoing 5.7-liter unit. That’s a 32% increase in power and 21% more torque, transforming the driving experience with sharper throttle response and acceleration approaching the SRT-level models.

Despite the added performance, the R/T 392 keeps its practicality. It offers three rows of seating for up to seven passengers and a towing capacity of 8,700 pounds — figures that make the SUV appealing not just to enthusiasts, but also to buyers needing genuine utility. Outside, upgrades include a retuned exhaust system with the signature “Dodge rumble” and subtle styling cues that visually align the R/T 392 with the SRT models.

The standout feature of this version is its price. According to a leaked dealer sheet, the starting point is $49,995 before destination, bringing a 475-hp V8 into reach for a much wider audience. That makes the R/T 392 the most powerful Durango you can buy under $50,000 and positions it as an attractive alternative for buyers who find the Hellcat either too expensive or too extreme.

Even with an aging platform, the Durango continues to show steady demand. The launch of the R/T 392 confirms that Dodge isn’t retiring the iconic SUV line anytime soon. The new model strengthens Durango’s muscle-SUV credentials and rekindles interest in naturally aspirated V8s while they are still available.
