BMW Prepares a New-Generation X5: Key Details Kept Under Wraps

BMW is working on a new X5 with unconventional styling and a choice of three powertrains. The brand’s new Neue Klasse design philosophy has already sparked heated debate among fans. The model is expected to arrive in 2028, while technical details remain tightly guarded. For now, the exterior design and overall concept are shaping up to be the most talked-about aspects.

BMW is preparing to launch the next generation of its X5 crossover, a model that is already generating plenty of discussion among car enthusiasts. The future X5’s styling, inspired by the Neue Klasse concept, has become a flashpoint for controversy. Many fans believe the current X5 is one of the most attractive vehicles in its class, but BMW’s designers have decided to take a radically different approach to its appearance.

Renderings circulating online offer a glimpse of what the 2028 X5 could look like. According to these images, the overall proportions will remain familiar, but both the front and rear ends will receive a complete redesign. The side profile stands out in particular: clean lines, a gently sloping roofline, flush door handles, and subtle roof rails give the vehicle a cohesive, modern feel. That said, the taillights—resembling a blend of the X6 and XM—look controversial and may not sit well with more conservative BMW loyalists.

The rear window appears small for a crossover of this size, while the bulky bumper and aggressive diffuser add a sporty edge that some may find excessive. Still, practicality hasn’t been overlooked. The cargo area will retain BMW’s signature split tailgate, making loading and unloading easier. Up front, the design follows the Neue Klasse theme seen on other upcoming models—minimalist and sharply defined, a look that currently divides opinion but could grow on buyers over time.

The biggest mystery lies under the hood. BMW is not abandoning traditional gasoline and diesel engines, but the lineup will also include fully electric versions as well as a hydrogen-powered variant. This broad range of powertrains should allow the X5 to remain relevant across different markets and buyer preferences. Detailed specifications and trim information are expected closer to the start of sales.

The debut of the new X5 could take place as early as 2027, with market launch planned for 2028. For now, it remains to be seen how perceptions of the controversial design will evolve—and whether BMW can once again impress fans with its blend of technology and style. One thing is certain: the next-generation X5 is poised to become one of the most talked-about new vehicles of the late 2020s.
