Three Dashboard Symbols Many American Drivers Don’t Actually Understand

Most drivers know when and how to turn on their headlights — but far fewer can confidently identify every symbol on their dashboard.

Three Dashboard Symbols Many American Drivers Don’t Actually Understand

Headlights, high beams, fog lights — every driver knows how to switch them on. But when it comes to the full set of icons on the dashboard, a lot of American motorists are less sure of what they’re looking at. Here’s a quick guide to a few “hidden” symbols that can make using your instrument panel a whole lot clearer.

Fog light indicators

There are two nearly identical icons: each looks like a half-circle beam with a set of small horizontal lines crossed out by a wavy slash. The difference is subtle. One icon points to the right with straight lines, while the other points left with diagonal lines.

The right-facing symbol indicates the rear fog lights; the left-facing one stands for the front fog lights. You may see these symbols both on the headlight switch and on the dashboard.

Ventilation and air-recirculation indicator

Another common symbol shows a set of arrows looping in a circle or passing across the windshield. You’ll often find it on the climate-control buttons as well as on the display.

This icon refers to the ventilation and A/C system. When the recirculation button is active, the vehicle pulls air from inside the cabin instead of outside — useful when you’re trying to avoid exhaust fumes, dust, or unpleasant odors.

Fuel tank indicator

Everyone recognizes the little gas-pump symbol — even kids can point it out. But this simple icon has a small detail many people miss: the tiny arrow next to it.

That arrow isn’t decorative. It tells you which side of the vehicle the fuel filler door is on, a helpful reminder when you pull up to the pump in an unfamiliar car.
