How to Fix a Deep Scratch on Your Car at Home – Yes, It’s Possible

Tiny scratches can usually be removed with a thorough polish, but what about deep scratches? Here’s how to tackle them yourself.

How to Fix a Deep Scratch on Your Car at Home – Yes, It’s Possible

While small scratches can often be buffed out with careful polishing, deeper scratches require more attention. Fortunately, even these can be repaired at home in your garage.

Deep scratches affect the paint’s uniformity and can even lead to rust if left untreated, so it’s best not to ignore them. The repair process involves a few simple tools: isopropyl alcohol, a soft cloth, a paint mix matching your car’s color, a small brush, a sponge, filler, a spatula, and liquid glass (or clear coat).

Step 1: Clean the scratch with isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt and grease.

Step 2: Depending on the depth of the scratch, apply filler to even out the surface.

Step 3: After 2–3 minutes of drying, wrap a soft sponge in a cloth and apply liquid glass. Use light motions to remove any excess filler from the scratch.

Step 4: Apply the matching paint directly onto the scratch with a small brush. Avoid painting back and forth over the area—cover only the scratch itself. This final step protects the metal underneath and prevents future rust. Let it dry overnight.

For best results, carry out this repair in a well-lit garage so you can clearly see the scratch as you work.
