Next Generation Lamborghini Urus Will Remain a Hybrid, Development of Electric Car Postponed

According to preliminary data, the next generation crossover will appear in 2029, with the fully 'green' version expected no earlier than 2035.

Next Generation Lamborghini Urus Will Remain a Hybrid, Development of Electric Car Postponed

The Italian brand Lamborghini is part of the Volkswagen Group. Currently, the brand's most sought-after model is the Urus crossover. Recall, this SUV debuted in 2017, and in 2022, it underwent a technical update. In spring 2024, the lineup was complemented by a plug-in hybrid version called Urus SE. According to Jato Dynamics, in the first five months of 2025, the model sold 1,314 units in Europe, which is 46% more than in January-May of the previous year.

Previously, Lamborghini considered giving the next-generation Urus only a fully electric 'core', but later the company abandoned this plan. As we have noted more than once, sales of 'green' cars turned out to be not as high as manufacturers expected. Late last autumn, the brand's director of marketing and sales, Federico Foschini, hinted that the new Urus would retain a plug-in hybrid setup.

This information was now confirmed in an interview with the British edition Autocar by Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann. According to him, the new generation Urus (with hybrid system) will hit the market in 2029 (previously a closer date, 2026, was mentioned). The brand head also noted that the fully electric version of the future crossover will not be released before 2035.

According to preliminary data, the future Lamborghini Urus may retain the current plug-in hybrid setup. Recall, the system of the current Urus SE is based on a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo petrol engine, with an output of 620 hp and a torque of 800 Nm. It works in tandem with an asynchronous electric motor with permanent magnets (192 hp and 483 Nm), integrated into an eight-speed automatic. The maximum combined power of the system is 800 hp, torque – 950 Nm.

The Lamborghini Urus SE system also includes a traction battery located under the trunk floor, with a capacity of 25.9 kWh. Such a crossover can travel up to 60 km on a single charge in electric-only mode (based on WLTP cycle calculations), with maximum speed in this mode limited to 135 km/h. In hybrid mode, the Urus SE's 'max speed' is 312 km/h, and it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Stephan Winkelmann also noted that the release date of the brand’s first electric car might be postponed once again. Last year, it was assumed that the 'green' model would appear in 2028. Later, the date was moved to 2029, and now, evidently, it might be pushed back further. The company may make a corresponding decision at the beginning of next year.

As we previously reported, Porsche continues to update its legendary 911 series: following the rear-wheel-drive Carrera S, the updated all-wheel-drive Carrera 4S is presented, including the Targa version.

Porsche 911 Carrera 4S: return after update

The family update started in spring 2024 and continues in stages. The regular Carrera S is available as a coupe and convertible, and the 4S version is also traditionally offered as a Targa — this year marks its 60th anniversary. Details in our material.
